The Museum Of Unique | Living | Art

For the inspiration please see Joey Pang’s body art philosophy here. Full-body clients have the option of signing up to participate in the Museum of Unique | Living | Art. They and their skin / artwork will be displayed in museums, galleries and exhibitions around the world during the client’s lifetime. Upon passing their skin / artwork will be separated from the body, preserved for posterity and displayed on either flat-frames, akin to traditionally mounted canvases, or full-body manikins. The Museum | Full-body clients have the option of signing up to participate in the Museum of Unique | Living | Art. After separation, skin / artwork will eventually bequeathed to a single museum, the clients’ or the patrons’ family

Concept | Clients can personally commission their full-body artwork or be sponsored by a patron. We believe this shift in perception allows genuine tattoo art to be held against the same critical aesthetic standards as other artistic mediums. We have further long argued for a delineation between ‘tattoos’ and ‘tattoo art’ classifications; academic guide and article library available here. We envision the program will permit all genuine skin / artworks to be seen as gallery-worthy exhibitions; critiqued in a similar manner as say classical paintings or sculptures. The aim is to break any negative relegation of the practice from a purely rebellious, sub-culture and or ‘underground’ activity falling outside of the fine art world. The eventual removal of skin / artwork from the body bridges a divide between tattooing and fine art

Time Frame | the museum is a decades-long project. There are cultural, preserved tattooed-skin centers in Japan focused around the educational as well as geographically specific investigation of the practice. Furthermore a center in Amsterdam alongside a handful of small, private collections of preserved skin / artwork stand across Europe. Yet the concept for the museum project are full-body artworks that redefine how the human canvas is viewed, showing its capacity as a genuine art form. Indeed some may argue that skin / artworks are additionally complex in consideration of the dynamic interaction with the human figure
Separation Process | the museum project will be preserving far larger, unified areas as opposed to single ‘cut outs’. Additionally these are cohesively themed, not a random amalgamation or an eclectic pastiche which typically hints towards the carnivalesque. The museum again intends to promote a transition in public perception rather than consignment to macabre and or morbid fascinations. The practitioner is a trained doctor yet preserving skin / artwork is relatively straightforward, requiring a comparatively short series of treatments following separation. The process does not pose many technical complexities, more finding the right professional passionate about the concept. Cut lines are strategically placed, typically up say the inner arms and legs yet frequently requiring one along the torso. Skin is separated from tissue, moving out from these portions in the largest possible segments before undergoing treatment. Thus flat cuts around the wrists, neck and ankles are anticipated as the textured intricacies of the hands, face and feet make these harder to separate in one portion. Skin / artwork is then positioned over its manikin, requiring some joining and stabilizing, or may be ‘flat-framed’. Preserved and mounted skin / artworks are then kept in sealed, climate controlled containers for display. Timing is a critical factor before deterioration commences yet keeping works soaked in solutions prior to setting allows for transportation to final alignment
Location | one headquarter is in West Sussex, Southern England. Construction is underway however separated skin / artwork will not be displayed for [hopefully] many years to come
